Response Paper- "The Mission"
"The Mission" was an excellent movie and I enjoyed it immensely. I especially liked Jeremy Irons' character, Father Gabriel. He was a Jesuit priest working with the natives of South America in order to convert them into Christians. Although I did not like their intentions, which is basically forcing a religion on an innocent and exploited native people. I did, however, admire Father Gabriels honest belief in Jesus and his main

helping the natives fight, but he cannot stop them. He is very angry with Eduardo and explains that by fighting they are directly going against Gods orders, "Without love, there is no God." Gabriel says. Despite both their opinions on how the situation should be handled, the Portuguese do come and slaughter everyone. Eduardo dies fighting, while Gabriel is killed with the women and children as they leave the burning church, walking towards their oppressors.
