In Ernest Hemingway's Hills like white elephants, a couple is on a train to Madrid. The couple seems to travel from place to place living a carefree life and trying new drinks. The reader realizes that the girl is pregnant. Through out the story the couple argues trying to make the other see their point and convince them to do what they want. Neither of them ever says exactly what they want though.

stopped talking. Like when Jig sees growth " on the other side" of the Zaragoza station, the American looks at the suitcases bearing stickers of where they "spent nights". The narrative also tells us that Jig holds two strands of beads in here hands from the curtain, but why only two. Did it represent her two choices? This leaves the reader wondering why she's smiling at the end.
