Sigmond Freud developed a theory that he believed best represented the development of ones personality. We can use his theory to explain certain habits that a person develops. The constant theme in this book is that Ignatius is stuck in childhood. If at the beginning of the book they introduced him as a nine-year-old girl, I do not think that there would be much confusion in the reader. He shows such a dependency on his mother and she lets him be the child that he is.
