During the civil rights movement the key concept was non-violent protest no matter how violent the opposition was. They figured if they were violent and fought back the whites who opposed them would just fight and use even more violence to bring them down. So in the end the after numerous protests, speeches, sit-ins, demonstrations, and marches African American won the battle of integration.
