I got the impression when the author explained the smell right after the suspected marriage and no one having seen Emily and Homer out around town that Homer had died. I wonder why nobody else thought of that. Everyone assumed that Homer had left even though no one saw him go. I think Emily probably killed Homer to keep him from ever leaving her. says that Emily's father left her penniless that she continued to get by for all those years. The only act of kindness or charity I saw toward Miss Emily was Colonel Sartoris waiving her taxes for so many years.
There is no reference to the rose mentioned in the title. As she did not lead a life of joy or pleasure, were they referring to the burial roses purchased for Emily?
