The rights and status of women in the Canadian society have improved considerably in the last century. However, gender equality is still being threatened . Blatantly sexist laws and practices are slowly being eliminated while social perceptions of "women's roles" sometimes continue to stagnate and even degrade back to traditional ideals. It is these social perceptions that challenge the evolution of women as equal on all levels.

Whatever choices we make for our own
lives, most of us envision a world for our daughters, nieces and granddaughters where all girls
and women will have the opportunity to develop their unique skills and talents and pursue their
dreams. We've accomplished so much, yet a lot still remains to be done. Substantial barriers to
the full equality of Canadian women still remain before our freedom as a Nation can be called
complete.
