r certain experienced modernity first hand, in the manner of actually living in the 20th century, the poetry he wrote was not from an expressive, self-reflexive stance, but from a position as a commentator and critic with a completely modern outlook. And Auden did so with enough perspective and insight to engage his audience and provoke them to thought, and, perhaps, even to action.
