They chose to runaway from their problems, only to replace them with a new one or direct their attention to a problem that does not exist. Dave was looked upon as the main problem in the family. Even though the real problems existed between the mother and father, they chose to redirect their problems at Dave so they did not have to deal with the real issue at hand.
