The Struggle Against Innocence

Both Samuel Ludlow from Legends of the Fall and Roxie Hart from Chicago are innocent and naïve. They both lack the ruthlessness that is needed to survive in both war and a Social Darwinist society.

Both were trying to live out a dream of bringing success to themselves with either fame and fortune or honor. Their only problem was that they had not learned how to balance their excessive innocence with their ruthlessness.
