They are set out in triplets (codons) which code for specific amino acids. This triplet code was proved by Crick's frame-shift experiment. The code in DNA is redundant because there are more codes than amino acids, it is degenerate and contains no gaps. To mark the end of a protein code, there are stop codons placed.
