While The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald may appear at first glance to be nothing more than a simple story, it is indeed far more complex. The novel is a societal comment made by Fitgerald on the true nature of the American Dream. Through Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Wilson, and Gatsby himself, the author illustrates the emptiness that comes in place of this so called "American Dream".

In conclusion, the Great Gatsby, while a fascinating story, is also a societal comment by the author. Fitgerald uses the characters Wilson, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, and finally Jay Gatsby himself to express a particular message about the nature of the American Dream. The hollow, empty lives of the characters show the reader this dream is certainly not what it seems.
