you have some things, as in the case of the Buchanans, filled with material comforts and luxuries, but even with all this was empty without purpose since they had no hopes and dreams to give purpose to their life. These people had nothing to strive for. When saying this novel was a dirge for the American dream it was correct since basically the American dream can never be achieved and it?s failure is unavoidable.
