Perhaps it is precocious of me to say it, but I believe a great many southerners speak as if they are uneducated.
My husband and his family are among those many. His mother speaks so poorly that rednecks refer to her as a hillbilly. I do not know the difference and perhaps it is because I am a northerner and have never been exposed to it very little. I have never cut off

my college instructors use the word (or is it words) y?all, among other southern slang words. Amazingly enough, even my English professor has used y?all on several occasions. Y?all and its counterpart?s y?alls, all y?all, and all y?alls sound ridiculously unintelligent to me. How could such intelligent people use such language?
Not that long ago, I caught myself saying big ol? as in big ol? bruise. I cried.
