The Princess Bride is written to satire traditional fantasy and fairy-tales. William Goldman presents his satire by creating an exaggerated story based on traditional fairy tales and fantasy. The traditional fantasy tale would have her choose love but that is where Goldman pulls a grand, satirical stunt of having her choose the opposite. Buttercup chooses life over love and that is satirical because it makes a very unfitting and suprising end compared to what one thought would happen.
