Peru's Coca Reduction Efforts
We have reviewed the 1999 Peru coca cultivation survey, and the results of Peru's coca reduction
efforts are excellent. Peru achieved a net reduction of 24 percent in total coca cultivation compared
to 1998, from 51,000 hectares down to 38,700 hectares. This lowers the total amount of potential
cocaine production to 175 metric tons - a 27 percent decrease from a potential yield of 240 metric
tons in 1998.
