Claudius importance to the play is that he kills his brother Old Hamlet by poisoing him. I think that Claudius real role in the play is to have him suffer for killing Old Hamlet. I really don't know why Claudius is such a bad person in the play. I mean Shakespeare could have had Hamlet kill is father that would put the play in a different mode.
