Hidden Meanings
In Swift's essay "A Modest Proposal," he gives a
picture of how life in Ireland was for the Irish tenants
who were mistreated by the British landlords. "A Modest
Proposal" forces the reader to read beyond the text and
find the hidden meanings that lie in the words. Swift's
use of satire allows him to wear the masks of an
accountant, a breeder, and a politician throughout the

Swift's essay was a perfect example of a well written
satire. Swift was able to capture his readers by giving
different angles in his presenting of the masks. The masks
made the reader look for hidden meanings that would lie in
the context. Readers were able to understand the views
Swift presented by identifying what the masks were. The
irrationality of his proposal lead to the formation of
other's own ideas and perspectives.
