In the movie, the pilot survives the plane crash and has to be taken care of by Simon. The reason that I believe that the director chose to do this was because it was easier to have the pilot there from the beginning of the book, than to make him fall out of the sky from the war in the background (which he also omitted). scared these kids are. In the novel, the beastie is something from within themselves, that they take onto the island, it is there fears and themselves rolled into one. And when Simon figures out the fact that it is an almost a satanic element it adds to the fear. The movie failed to touch on this point and for this I was saddened. Therefore it was a bad move from the director.
