their roles in the relationship basically switched. That is how their relationship evolved; Lone felt that he was above everyone else and refused to go along with the majority and Ma felt that the majority was right and that he would follow them because they must all be right. In the end, they had each switched their beliefs and this forced them to not get along just as they had in the beginning.
