Ian McEwan effectively creates the scene, for which The Child In Time is based upon, in the opening passage that I selected to use for this essay. The sophisticated language that McEwan employs throughout the novel is used effectively in descriptive sections to build up imagery and atmosphere in a great way. It also sets the tone and mood of the rest of the novel, which I looked upon with anticipation after reading this passage.
