Symbolism showed this by the evil music, plot showed this by explaining how Kino changes while the pearl is in his possession, and characterization displays this by demonstrating how Kino and people in his community changed because of the pearl. I think that as a result of what happened to Kino, we ultimately get nothing from materialism or money. We need to control our fortune, not have our fortune control us.
