She had been taken seriously by the critics and was pretty much respected. People thought that she was a real artist, some people even thought that she was one of the best of the expatriet writers who was over in Europe at that time.

This is what a true artist does. Artists are always going against conformity. In this case, Kay was going against conforming to what the critics said she should do in her work. But by being a true artist she did the right thing and created an artwork that was important for it's time because it talks about justice and love and goodness. Kay Boyle is no hack, she is a true artist.
