When people want independence, they want it immediately, but it is not that easy. Independence takes many steps. The path of life has many forks of independence. When you get to an important one, you will know in your heart what to do.
Jean Valjean always knew what to do. In his life, he had many steps towards independence. His first step was attempting to escape from jail numerous times. Although he was never successful,

warned him that reading would only cause him discontentment. His owner was correct. Reading gave him the knowledge to decide that independence must be won for the slaves and ultimately it was.
Eventually, we all become independent. We must know when to take the appropriate steps towards it. Jean Valjean, Ender Wiggin and Fredrick Douglas all did. In the end, they were all happy with their independence and were better people for it.
