Through the mathematics logbook, the ways in which prior mathematical understanding and knowledge was evident in the different levels of ability from each student. Through using language to explain their understanding, the students were able to work out were they went wrong and correct it themselves thus gaining a greater understanding of the activity at hand and the mathematical concepts.

about how children learn mathematics are that we are then able to get the maximum understanding from the students and enable them to grasp more complex notions and mathematical concepts. Through understanding their learning development teachers are able to provide a rich environment for learning mathematics along with the necessary direction to help children recognise relationships, make connections, talk about their mathematical understanding and create meaningful learning which is the best way to ensure retention.
