The way he overuses his vivid imagination is sad because the only thing it's good for is enabling Willy to go through one more day of his piteous life, full of bitterness, confusion, and depression. Once all hope has escaped him, he commits suicide in an attempt to leave his family with the only thing he had left to offer. Willy's dependancy on his happier past is what ultimately leads to his demise.
