For millennia before the nineteenth century, China appeared to be a "master civilization," integrating and ruling millions of square miles, suzerain over other Asian countries, sophisticated, populous and unparalleled in longevity of success. Japan seemed to be an isolated, semi-feudal land, where for several centuries a military dictatorship exerted difficult control over pugnacious, medieval clans.
