Throughout history the government or leader of a tribe or country tends to punish their people if they do something that is considered wrong.
Whether the punishment is execution or taking away their privileges, if this not done then the people might rebel and eventually the country or civilization will collapse. A country without any way of punishment is just as like a country without a leader.

In conclusion, I think that Life imprisonment is much better than the death penalty.
Dying naturally is better than being hanged or electrocuted or shot at, or being injected with lethal chemicals. Everyone should be given a second chance, because people learn from their mistakes. If you send someone to prison for life, then that person will never be giving another chance, even is he or she were really innocent.
