Anarchy in Salem Village
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many characters pretend that they have been bewitched in order to accomplish personal goals. Others simply took advantage of the hysteria by accusing other people of practicing witchcraft. Three characters that abused this power the most were Abigail Williams, Mr. Putnam, and Mrs. Putnam. These three characters were responsible for the hangings of many people and for ruining many more lives.

In the story, there were three main characters that severely added to the outbreak of hysteria in Salem Village. There was Abigail Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, who all had secret agendas which they completed through the misery of others. To them, their goals were more important than their good name and the lives of others. These characters did not expose witchcraft in their town; they only exposed the lack of justice and morals.
