In "True Love", Viorst skillfully gives examples of a comical and realistic view of love. The poem is aptly named true love because love does not simply imply feelings of passion, but of fondness, friendship, affection and devotion. The wife puts on make-up and watches football games just to please her husband out of love. Viorst obviously believes this agreement must exist in a marriage if the relationship is going to endure. They make concessions in their life in order to please their partner and maintain a happy marriage. In the end they can still feel love towards each other after married so long and going through the rituals of life.
