Although Las Casas might have exaggerated a bit using a repetitive theme to put across his point, his general idea was accurate. Amerindians did not generally aggressively resist the conquest or European efforts to take over their land and exploit their work. They adapted by taking up and embracing European culture little by little, so that the few of them that remained would survive.
