Paul that he cannot even put it into words. Paul's thoughts artfully describe why he dislikes the Great War and why his horrible experiences distance himself so much from others int he world; "We are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and super-ficial -- I believe that we are lost." This quote exemplifies his thoughts that the war, and even human violence in general is a lost cause.
