Developing Paul in All Quiet on the Western Front
Throughout the course of a novel sophisticated authors are able to
send a character on an influential journey that changes his of her outlook or
attitude towards life. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the
author, Erich Maria Remarque demonstrates his literary capability by making
obvious developments in Paul, the protagonist. Paul is mutated mentally,
physically and morally resultant of the horrific events

lines. It is clear that, over time, Paul has modified himself to adapt to his
new surroundings of fear, terror and dismay.
Looking over all the conflicts which Paul has overcome as the novel
unfolds clearly he has been deeply affected not only physically but mentally
as well. Although he lived an abbreviated life he experienced a great deal
more than normal men do in the course of a lifetime.
