Many advertisers look to poll the common, ordinary, every-day working class Joe, the people who are within their largest viewing and marketing area. One such internet site has developed a questionnaire to make this polling a bit easier, not only for the businesses, but also for the people being asked.
VALS, or Values and Lifestyles has come up with a survey that polls people ages 18-65+ on a variety of topics. Their responses, in turn,

can possibly be informed of, I take a good amount of time to read through several online papers a day and watch CNN and various other political news channels.
You can see that surveys or questionnaires are not going to be correct in their assessment of people all the time, but all in all I believe they do provide a pretty accurate representation of people and what their views are.
